Where is the Club's Home Rink?

Section 3 of the FFSC bylaws states:

Home Rink: This club shall have its headquarters in the Big Dipper Ice Arena, Fairbanks, Alaska.

What does that mean, exactly? To help explain, the definitions under Part 3, MR 2.04 of the Official USFS Rulebook are shown below:

  1. The "Principal Skating Headquarters" of a club shall typically be the address of the rink in which the club conducts the majority of its skating sessions. This address shall be recorded in the USFS database under the club's name. A club may name only one principal skating headquarters.
  2. Other rink locations, listed as "Additional Rink Addresses" in the USFS Directory and database, may be listed by the club. These locations are defined as any other surface where the club contracts ice. These listings are in place to protect the ice of the one club from being usurped by another (MR 7.01).

What Ice Rinks Are Available?

Skating Rinks

The FFSC coordinates with the local skating rinks to insure that both competitive and recreational figure skaters have adequate practice ice. Free-style and dance sessions may be purchased on a month- or per-session basis. A calendar is posted on the FFSC bulletin board opposite the skate rental window at the Big Dipper Ice Arena. Please check out our All Things Ice page for more information.

What's the Scoop with Beaver Sports?

Each time you shop at Beaver Sports, tell them you're with the Fairbanks Figure Skating Club and automatically a portion of your purchase will accrue "points" and in turn, the club will be sent periodic slips of accrued amounts than can be transformed into gift certificates.

Where Can I Get My Skates Sharpened?

There are two recommended options for getting your figure skates sharpened in Fairbanks.

Option #1

The FFSC owns its own skate sharpener. You may contact any person in the list below and pay $10.00 (no charge for labor) for them to sharpen your skates. This money goes to the FFSC to help maintain the sharpener.

Option #2

You may also contact John Alderson (ginaak 'at' yahoo 'dot' com), who can sharpen skates for both club and non-club members. The sharpening fee goes to Mr. Alderson, not the FFSC.

What Events and Programs Are There?

Skate with U.S. Program

The Skate with U.S. Program is a basic skating skills program (A.K.A. "Skating School") developed by U.S. Figure Skating. The FFSC offers group skating lessons through this program for all ages and skill levels.

Ice Shows

The Fairbanks Figure Skating Club Ice Show is usually held in the winter. Club members will be in the opening and closing production numbers; and at least one, possibly two, group numbers. Skating school members (non-FFSC) may participate in the skating school group number only. Solos will be at the discretion of the Artistic Director.

Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival

If I Don't Wish to Skate, How Can I Get Involved?

Volunteering

There are many opportunities to volunteer your skills and time, and all efforts are appreciated. Our members work together to produce multiple ice skating reviews/shows for the enjoyment of the North Star Borough community each year. Car washes, selling calendars and raffle tickets, helping out with the Annual Ice Show, hosting parties, and getting paid to help coach Skating School sessions are just some examples of things you can do to stay involved. Being a board member is also a great way to learn about the club. The club would not be the great organization it is today without the hard work and dedication from many volunteers. Feel free to check out our Fundraising page to read about the latest opportunities to help out the Club.

Committees

The FFSC is a non-profit organization comprised of volunteer members. All FFSC members are encouraged to participate in committee-directed activities. The Club is what you make of it! Have great ideas? Are you harboring some hidden talent? Please help the Club by joining a committee and attending board meetings! Notify any FFSC Officer or Committee Chair if you would like to help. Standing committees and their chairs include:

  1. Finance (Sue Ellison)
  2. Fundraising (Ken and Sue Starks)
  3. Ice (Sue Ellison)
  4. Ice Show (Jo Ellen Rachow)
  5. Media Representative (Lynn Ribar)
  6. Membership (Marjorie Allan)
  7. Policies/Procedures and Bylaws (Missy Lizotte)
  8. Program Development (Jo Ellen Rachow)
  9. Skate Sharpening (Allison Zusi-Cobb)
  10. Skating School (Ken Starks)
  11. Special Events (Marjorie Allan)
  12. Testing and Competition (Lynn Ribar)
  13. Web/Media (Ken Papp)

Who Is Currently a Board Member?

FFSC Board of Directors (2007-2008)

Feel free to send questions or comments to any Officer on the Board of Directors.

The FFSC Board of Directors has the responsibility and authority to ensure the proper operation and government of the Club. Board of Directors meetings are scheduled monthly. Notices of the board meetings are posted seven days prior to the meeting on the FFSC bulletin board at the Big Dipper Ice Arena and to the FFSC | News RSS feed on this web site. The Board of Directors has established a Rules of Order (PDF 76 Kb) document to (1) help the Board conduct these meetings more efficiently and (2) make the General Membership and public aware of what to expect should they decide to attend. Members and the public are encouraged to attend these meetings. The first 30 minutes of each meeting is an "open period" for any comments, suggestions, or questions about any topic related to club business.

The Board of Directors consists of six or seven members who are elected by mailed ballots at the end of the fiscal year. New board members are announced at the Summer General Membership meetings. Four new members are elected during even-numbered years, and three new members are elected during odd-numbered years. Officers are elected by the new board at the first general membership meeting of the fiscal year.

Who Is Currently a Club Member?

Membership statistics for the 2008/2009 membership year will be available on our Membership page sometime in July. Any member of the Club can request a club member roster list from Marjorie Allan (Membership Chair) or Ken Papp (Webmaster). The use of member phone numbers and e-mail addresses for solicitation unrelated to FFSC business is not tolerated.
